From Family Legacy to Future Vision: Jillian Hamilton

Jillian Hamilton is inextricably tied to Rundle Academy. A love of learning, community and supporting those in need is part of her lineage and now her legacy. Thanks to Jillian and her husband Jay Jay’s monetary contribution, Rundle Academy’s planned expansion through the Building Futures capital campaign is off to a strong start.   

Rundle Academy's legacy of excellence, nurtured through decades of commitment and support, now finds a champion in Jillian Hamilton. As the granddaughter of Rundle College co-founder Dr. W.J. Collett, Jillian carries forward a family tradition of passion for education and community support. To spearhead efforts to expand Rundle's reach and impact, Jillian has joined as a co-chair of the Building Futures capital campaign.

Since its inception, Rundle Academy has been dedicated to providing an outstanding educational experience in a nurturing and engaging environment for students with diagnosed learning disabilities. The commitment to an enriched, personalized education has prepared thousands of graduates for our ever-changing world. The expansion will allow for an additional 175 students with diagnosed learning disabilities access to a specialized education. A high post-secondary acceptance rate confirms the education received, paired with a nurturing and inclusive atmosphere, truly prepares graduates for life after Rundle.

Her grandfather’s vision for Rundle has remained constant for decades, a testament to the need and the community he and co-founder, Dr. Rodney Conklin, built from the ground up. By the end of Rundle’s first year in 1985, it became apparent the school was in financial trouble. Refusing to close their doors, the founders were determined to persevere and find a way to offer their ideal educational experience, one where each student’s growth and well-being is prioritized and protected. And persevere they did. Rundle Academy remains a premier Calgary private school, developing inspired minds and unparalleled character.

“My grandfather’s passion for education was paramount but more specifically, the education and mentorship for those who some may consider the underdog,” said Hamilton. “His ability to nurture these individuals to their full potential despite any socio-economic challenges was truly inspiring. Although now long passed, his passion is still infectious. I consider it a privilege to continue supporting his efforts through this campaign and any future endeavors.”

The impact Rundle Academy has had on every student and family that has walked through their doors is profound. There is something magical about Rundle in the way it inspires, builds confidence and creates a love of learning that lasts a lifetime. There are so many reasons why alumni, students, parents and faculty love and support Rundle.

“Prior to joining the Rundle community, my son was in a traditional public school system. Over the course of those years, I watched his confidence decrease significantly and his love for learning all but completely diminish,” recalls Jillian. “Within a few short months, the Academy completely changed the trajectory of my son’s life – his confidence and sense of self worth skyrocketed, his marks were on a steady incline, and he absolutely loves attending school. I cannot express what this has meant to our family, we are overwhelmed with gratitude.”

With her positive personal experience as a Rundle parent and the legacy of her family, it was an easy and immediate decision for Jillian and her husband to support the Academy expansion project with a most generous $250,000 donation. The Building Futures capital campaign is an investment in Rundle Academy, its community and the future. We want to give as many children as possible access and opportunity to a Rundle education coupled with all the resources they will need to succeed.

“I am beyond thrilled to witness the growth of Rundle Academy and cannot wait to see its continued success in the future,” said Hamilton. “I believe the increased student body will greatly benefit the current community by increasing the social circle and strengthening peer networks.”

The magic of Rundle Academy is powerful. The bonds of trust, shared values and the collective effort to maintain a high level of education and support for the students is what makes the Rundle community so strong. The history of supporting Rundle from within dates back to its very first year. The business case to keep the school going was not solid, but the social and emotional impacts were evident from day one. Rundle Academy is so needed, so necessary, the community has always done whatever it takes to keep the doors open, the lights on and the exceptional education accessible.
